Road Safety Week launches

Road Safety Week was launched on Monday 4 May with Giant Walks in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Hastings. Children from schools and kindergartens walked in their local community, holding banners and placards and reminding drivers to slow down and look out for kids outside their school/centre and in their community.

In Auckland, a special assembly was held at Rowandale School after the Giant Walk, with Safekids Aotearoa. Travelwise students presented Jacinda Ardern MP (Labour) and Julie-Anne Genter MP (Green) with the UN Declaration on Child Road Safety for signing. NZ Police, ACC, St John, NZ Fire Service, Auckland Transport, our sponsors QBE Insurance, and Max the Pukeko attended the launch.

In Wellington, NZ Police joined the walk at Upper Hutt Primary School and also taught the students a road safety poem.

Ashgrove School in Rangiora and Lumsden Kindergarten in Hastings also both held walks, and Shirley Playcentre in Christchurch launched the week with a road safety talk and bike check.

Giant Walks

Throughout the week, Giant Walks took place across the country, from Kaitaia to Invercargill. A total of 45 organisations confirmed Giant Walks were taking place in their community, calling on drivers to slow down and look out for kids.
